Louis "Louie" Zamperini, an Olympian and World War II hero has a powerful story that goes far beyond the end of the war.
Watanabe yells a command uttered many times over many nightmares from the nights before "Look at me!" It is repeated. "Look at me!!" and for the first time Louie says "No." before walking inside and kneeling at the altar. This moment in the film was so special to me and I had tears streaming down my face. He had chosen to walk away from his captor and he chose the power to do that, to have peace in his life and in his family. That night and every night since, he and his wife report that he slept well.
It's my favorite film I've seen all year. I thought Samuel Hunt (Louis Zamperini) and Merritt Patterson (Cynthia) were dynamic together onscreen and David Sakurai as Watanabe gave a spectacular performance. This movie is so well done; from cinematography to screenplay, etc. I recommend that if you see only one film in the theater this year, this should be it.
